An Alarming Problem in Our School
Did you know that if we don't recycle, every piece of trash we throw into the bin ends up in a dump like Fedrpuš, where they bury it underground? Which furthermore pollutes the water we drink and even the soil we plant fruits and vegetables in. So, be careful the next time you eat an apple or drink a glass of tap water, since they might not always be clean. Moreover, being ignorant of this problem will have further consequences.
Speaking of ignorance, it is a huge problem in our generation. We often don't realise that, if we put away our problems now, they will accumulate and come back worse than before. We must take responsibility for our actions. Our parents may not have taught us how to take care of our planet, but we don't need to repeat their mistakes. We can't let our ignorance get the best of us and teach not only ourselves but also the young people around us, so we all can live quality lives. The least we can do is recycle our trash.
For example, have you ever noticed that there are recycling bins in our school? The bins for plastic and paper have been a part of our school for approximately 15 years. However, that's not the case for the recycling bins for cans, which have been here since June 2024. The bins are grey and have a piece of paper taped to them with its intended use written on it. They have been put here on each floor to encourage students to recycle more. Despite all of this, students still throw their trash in the regular bins, especially cans.
Did you know that if we don't recycle aluminium, it typically ends up in landfills where it can take up to 500 years to decompose? Aluminium can be recycled over and over again without losing any quality, which helps to conserve non-renewable fossil fuels and reduce emissions of harmful gases into our atmosphere, which cause global warming. Recycling is a way to lighten the burden on our planet even just a little.
Every one of us has recycled at least once in our life, right? A lot of people aren't recycling and by doing that, bad things are happening and ruining the environment. For instance, pollution. Are you aware that bad air shortens the lives of three thousand Czechs every year? Another bad thing is the earlier mentioned global warming. Human-induced global warming is currently increasing the temperature of the planet at a rate of 0, 2%. You don’t believe it? Have you seen the recent floods in our country? Well, that’s the effect on our dear Earth.
Sign your trash
We prepared a game for you about recycling. We hope you will take part in our game and help to improve the recycling situation in our school.
Explanation of the game:
1. Take your trash or your friend’s trash (a can or a plastic bottle).
2. Sign it with your name or a symbol.
3. Throw it into one of the special bins in our halls (plastic, cans).
4. We will count them and inform you who won (the winner is the one who recycled the most).
We will inform you in Bakaláři when the game will begin. The game will go on for a week. It will start on Monday 4th November and finish on Friday 8th November.
Get your markers ready!
The rules of the competition were simple: anyone in school who had a can or a plastic bottle would write their name on it and put it in the correct sorting bin. At the end of each day, pairs from our class collected the cans and plastic bottles and counted the points.
At the end of the week, we calculated who won, and the winner of the game was class 3. A. So, on the following Monday, we gave class 3. A some candy as a reward.
We would like to thank Miss Krýzová for convincing her class to participate in our competition. We also really appreciate the help provided by the cleaning ladies and the janitor.
We organized this game because we were shocked at the students ignorance about recycling their cans and plastic bottles when there are sorting bins on every floor.
